TREX Super Glue Tape

DIY Profile Sanding Blocks with T-REX® Super Glue Tape

Us woodworkers have seen a slew of new products hit the market that we have managed to turn into virtual personal assistants in our shop. Of them, CA glue, or super glue, and Double-Sided Tape seem to have truly stuck around for their practical versatility in a slew of applications. Today we look at a product from T-REX® that combines all that is useful from these two well-loved products and manages to marry them in a hybrid that I can’t help but love!

ABOUT T-REX®

T-REX© is a manufacturer that designs specialized tapes and adhesives that quite literally fill the gaps in the market where standard products seem to fall short.

Today we take a look at their Super Glue Tape, but feel free to go back to some of the previous products I have tested out, like their Brute Force Duct Tape with Epoxy, or their Extreme Tread Tape on a ramp.

About the Product

TREX Super Glue Tape

Before we get into what I have used this product for, let’s first talk about what it is!  T-REX® Super Glue Tape is a double-sided tape, designed to mimic the ultra-strong tack of Super Glue without the mess of application. As it improves standard woodworking geared double sided tape by skipping the bulk it tends to add and offers superior gripping power.

Where I think it really shines is in the quick application and ease of use, while still maintaining a super-strong bond. It bonds quite a few surfaces from metal to ceramic, wood, plastic, glass and even fabric. Over the course of the last few months, I used this tape to make Jigs, reinforce small projects, and have really enjoyed it. Because T-REX® Super Glue Tape is permanent, it provides long-lasting repairs and is clear, making it even more versatile for some applications.

The project I want to share with you today though is how I assemble sanding blocks for detailed profiles. It’s no secret that I love the small details on my projects, in fact, I would almost say it’s a signature of mine to add profiles you can’t find from a basic router bit to my pieces. Sanding profiles is a common woodworking obstacle and one that ultimately can be time-consuming and tedious to tackle. So- let’s walk through the steps of how I ultimately solve this issue!

STEPS

First, you’re going to take wood of different dimensions to create a mirror of your profile. For me, I find this to be a great use of scrap material! Depending on how complicated this is, you may need several pieces.

Once I have the dimensions I need to cut down, it’s quite simple to layer the wood together. Simply cut your T-REX® Super Glue tape to size and adhere to one side of the wood, applying pressure to ensure a flat and secure bond.

Peel the protective layer back and attach your next layer of wood on top. Apply Pressure and repeat as needed to replicate the mirror of your profile. I happened to make two of these blocks this day, and both relied on relatively easy dimensions, but keeping the edges crisp was important to the overall look.

Next, I take sandpaper and cut to the dimensions for the block. I used 220 grit as I wanted this to be a finishing step prior to painting.

Next, I mount the sandpaper to the woodblocks, again using ample strips of the T-REX® Super Glue Tape. As before, simply apply the tape to the wood with firm pressure, peel the protective backing off and begin mounting the sandpaper.

For me one note was because I wanted perfectly square corners, getting a good bend to the sandpaper was important. Another benefit of using a higher grit paper is the thinner and less rigid texture allows you to really form the shape as needed.

Apply firm pressure to ensure the sandpaper is fully bonded and you’re ready to get sanding!

One of the great things about projects like this in general, is that you’re making use of something that may normally go to waste. T-REX® did an excellent job designing a product that was both easy to use and also bridges the gap of other products. I know in this application, this product performed better than any of the others I have used in the past, and with so much success on other applications, it will definitely be a mainstay in my shop!
