Love how the snakes pop in the blue epoxy and the colors contrast with the mahogany, adding legs today too so we’re almost wrapped on this build. I have spent a lot of time the last week wondering I have spent a lot of time the last week wondering how we as a nation, as a human race move forward in a climate of pointing fingers and misunderstanding. I have heavily debated saying anything here, because honestly when I shared my feelings on my personal media, it felt like I couldn’t be heard because people successfully made my feelings about them. People began attacking other people they’ve never met simply because they could that overwhelmed me. I always followed my kids school motto “if you can be anything- be kind”. But-staying silent isn’t an option either, and in this situation isn’t the example I want to set. So- I want to share a story, and I hope it sheds some light on what we all need to have right now, compassion, understanding, and a desire to do what is right. Four years ago, I went on a quick weekend trip with a girlfriend of mine, we were celebrating my 30th birthday. While eating at the resorts main restaurant we met an incredible young black man, I say that now only because it is relevant to this story. Somehow we got on the topic or racism and specifically white privilege and what it really meant. He shared personal stories of situations he and his family have encountered, of times he was at risk, of times he was simply not respected for his intelligence and skills because of the color of his skin. He shared the impact it had on his relationships- these specifically got to me as I hurt for him at the loss he faced. We talked about politics, favorite foods, sports, all manner of things too, but his openness changed me forever. I shared storied of my life too, and he listened and engaged in struggles I had faced with love and compassion too. See, the act of hearing someone isn’t the same as “listening”. I thank him still to this day because while I wasn’t racist, I also didn’t understand what the various movements were trying to say. I didn’t get why #blacklivesmatter wasn’t #alllivesmatter. I felt at times it was divisive and it isn’t, its about awareness. I argued points with others I didn’t fully understand, and I thank this young man for shedding light from his perspective, and I am eternally grateful for it. * * Continued in comments
